Gas Fireplace Inserts
Gas log fireplace inserts are the perfect replacement for an existing wood fire. If you are tired of the work involved in keeping a wood fire going, but love the ambience of the flames, a gas log fireplace insert is a great solution. They fit all standard fireplace sizes, so installation is a breeze.
Freestanding Gas Log Fireplaces
Freestanding gas log fireplaces can go pretty much anywhere in a room. You can put them in a corner or have them against a wall. They are just as much at home in the middle of the room where they give you the same effect as a combustion heater.
Double sided Fireplaces
Double sided gas log fireplaces give you fantastic design flexibility. The cosiness of a gas log fire is visible on two sides, so two rooms get the benefit both of the warmth and the ambience. Double sided fireplaces can also be located centrally in a large living space so that the gas log fire become the feature of the space.
How a Gas Log Heater Works
Gas log fireplaces are brilliant because you can enjoy the wonders of a real log fire - without having to chop wood!
But how exactly does a gas fireplace work?
All gas fireplaces work in the same way, inbuilt or freestanding. Even if they look slightly different or have been installed in a unique way, the basics are the same.
There is a real fire thanks to gas vents feeding fuel into the enclosed fireplace. It's the material that "burns" which is fake.
The non combustible wood is traditionally ceramic, yet the realistic design would certainly attract a second glance. You'll also find pebbles or sand underneath the ceramic wood to help with insulation and heat retention.
Additionally, the flue removes carbon monoxide from the home while it also uses natural convection to draw in external air for the combustion process.
Gas Fireplace Services and Safety
Because gas log fires run off natural gas, safety is incredibly important. Both a gas leak and carbon monoxide leak pose serious health risks. There's even the added danger of a fire or explosion.
While the latter example may be a worst case scenario, safety is critical nonetheless. With help from Jim's Air Conditioning, our local gas fitters can ensure your fireplace is safe and sound.
Installed correctly, you should never have to worry about a serious safety risk. We will install a gas log fireplace so that it complies with all guidelines and regulations.
But, it's still useful to have a regular service, however, to keep an eye on fittings and fixtures which wear down over the years.
The gas line should have no cracks or damage, while the flue should be air tight.
Your local Jim's gas fitter can also inspect gas vents and the pilot light burner to ensure complete efficiency and performance. No one wants to see their beautiful fireplace impacted by soot, dust or carbon build up.

Have a question about gas log fires? Jim's Air Conditioning has you covered.
Does a gas log fire need a flue?
No, not all gas fireplaces or gas log fires require a flue. There are a few names used, such as ventless, flueless or unflued, and the carbon monoxide produced is not directly vented out of the home. Some models have catalytic converters that can convert the carbon monoxide into harmless carbon dioxide. However, an unflued gas heater should not be used in small rooms due to the potential health risk. It is highly recommended you do purchase a flued gas fireplace.
Are gas log fireplaces expensive to run?
Not at all. Gas heating produces roughly three times as much heat as an electric counterpart would. That means you could be saving about two-thirds on your yearly energy bills. When comparing gas units, such as a log fire to ducted heating, the costs balance out relatively well. The main difference is ducted systems can heat the whole home while gas log fireplaces are isolated to 1-2 rooms – or a few more depending on how they are installed.
How long do gas log fires last?
Depending on use, you can expect the actual ceramic log to start showing wear and tear after 2-3 years. This certainly doesn’t mean it needs to be replaced yet, though. A well maintained gas log fireplace should protect the ceramic logs so they should last for at least 5 years. If you can get 10 years of efficient use then that’s a big tick for responsible servicing.
