How Inverter Technology Works
If you want, think of it like running a marathon. An inverter is a runner at a steady tempo, pacing themselves to maximise energy use. On the other hand, non inverter technology is a runner who sprints, stops, sprints, and then stops. Energy is used in expensive spurts, and fairly inefficiently.
An intelligent piece of technology, inverter air conditioners have advanced control over the compressor motor. This leads to more intuitive temperature control and the ability to fine tune how much warm or cool air is released.
A traditional non inverter air conditioner turns on and off throughout the day. If you set the thermostat to a cool 21°C, once that temperature is reached the unit turns off, before turning on again to cool the room. For effective cooling a large amount of energy is required on start up.
Over the course of a summer you'll find the constant juggling between on and off will prove costly for your air conditioning.
Meanwhile, inverter technology allows the air con to remain active throughout the day in an energy efficient manner. Once 21°C is reached the compressor motor is told to slow down. The air con does not turn off, but instead saves energy.
And if the temperature slowly warms up then the inverter tells the compressor to speed up to maintain the desired temperature.

Inverter air conditioner prices are typically more expensive than conventional air conditioners. But the price difference can be eliminated in about two years because inverter technology is so much more efficient. It costs more to run your run of the mill AC than an inverter. So much so that the initial price difference is eaten up by the savings you make on your power bill in a couple of years.
If you want to be a bit more eco-friendly with your air conditioning, inverter technology is the best choice. You'll find it's worth the price you pay.
Inverter Air Conditioner FAQs
Have a question about inverter air conditioners? Read on to find the answer!
Are there disadvantages of an inverter air conditioner?
While there are no direct disadvantages of inverter air conditioning, the upfront costs are higher. Compared to traditional non inverter heating or cooling units the purchase price is typically larger for comparable systems. However, the long term running costs are cheaper thanks to the energy efficient costs of sustained heating and cooling.
How does an inverter air conditioner work?
Inverter technology simply dictates the speed of your reverse cycle or ducted system’s compressor motor. As it runs faster, more cool or warm air is produced. This variable frequency drive ensures your desired temperature on the thermostat is maintained, and the compressor readjusts depending on any fluctuations in the ambient air temperature.
Conversely, non invertor technology will see your air con turn off once the temperature on the thermostat is reached. The on-off cycle is repeated. In essence, it works at full capacity or is off.
Does inverter technology work for heating as well?
Yes, and most likely you will find inverter technology in reverse cycle units. So your split system or ducted heating and cooling unit will be capable of intelligent heating, which will equal savings during winter.
